Comedy Blogedy: How long have you been gigging in stand-up?
George Wright: Since November 2011 so 7 months but it’s now picking up a bit. Since leaving uni I’ve started setting up my own nights with my brother recently, called Laughing Coyote, and that’s a lot more work and fun.
Comedy Blogedy: How would you describe your comedy?
George Wright: I would describe it as cheeky, scatty and high energy.
Comedy Blogedy: Which comedians influence your comedy?
George Wright: I like lots of comedians. One of my favourite new(er) acts at the moment is Richard Gadd. I think you can watch and learn from all other comedians, whether it’s what to do or what not to do.
Comedy Blogedy: Did you always want to go into comedy?
George Wright: Yes, it has pretty much always been an idea of mine. Saying that though, I think I’ve wanted to do most things I’ve seen in life.
Comedy Blogedy: How do you go about writing your material?
George Wright: If something makes me giggle I try and work out why and then translate that into something I could say. Quite a lot of things make me giggle though so there’s a large unused pile.
Comedy Blogedy: Do you gig as a stand-up full time or is it more of a part-time hobby? If so, do you find that your main job influences your material?
George Wright: I just finished uni a month ago and am now working in a restaurant. My material is more based around me bumbling through life so work hasn’t really come up yet, but I’m sure it will do.
Comedy Blogedy: What do you find the most enjoyable and frustrating parts of the amateur comedy circuit?
George Wright: I enjoy seeing new acts who have original ideas that you couldn’t see anywhere else. Frustrating – rape jokes and lazy “shock” comedy.
Comedy Blogedy: What’s your favourite type of audience to perform to?
George Wright: People who get on board with the whimsey of my act from the off.
Comedy Blogedy: Have you been heckled a lot since you’ve started gigging? Do you enjoy being heckled? What’s the best heckle you’ve had?
George Wright: Heckles are okay if they are funny and you can play with them. It’s all about having fun. I haven’t really had any vicious heckles.
Comedy Blogedy: What advice would you give to new acts thinking about starting out in comedy?
George Wright: Find a friendly open mic night and just have a bit of fun with it. Make sure you’re enjoying it.
