CB: What is your show about?
SM: It’s a sketch and character hour show with a concept that I can’t say because I THINK it’s a funny part of the show. Also I’m writing this in June so it might all change and become a serious play in the theatre section.
CB: Why did you write this show?
SM: Because I wanted to see if I enjoyed doing comedy on my own. I’m in a sketch group (Massive Dad) and we took a break from doing live stuff, so I thought I’d have a bash. Then I waited two years because I was so scared and had no idea what show to do. Then last year I had an idea for a show so here I am.
CB: What comedians and comedy writers have impacted the way you write your show structures and material?
SM: I love sketch groups like Sheeps and Lazy Susan because they play around with narrative while keeping the joke count super high. Same with Joseph Morpurgo who I just love for how clever he can be while simultaneously doing something totally stupid
CB: What is your advice for new comedians and writers who want to write their first show?
SM: Book ten minutes before you’ve got anything and whatever you do, don’t cancel it or run away from it. Then repeat until you’ve got something that isn’t absolute shite.
Stevie Martin will perform her show Vol. 1 at the Edinburgh Festival
